The Barbadian Ex-Police Association Inc.(USA) was formed on the 5th March,1963 as a result of an idea conceptualized by the late Wilfred Best at a farewell function sponsored by Herbert Dowridge and himself. This function was held in honour of the visit to New York by the band of the Royal Barbados Police Force (then the Barbados Police Force ) in December,1962.The addresses of former policemen residing in New York were acquired, and letters sent out within one week, resulting in the formation of the association.
Our motto which was submitted by the late Brother Archbishop Francis Dalrymple is the Latin inscription, Spectamur Agendo, translated , " Let us be judged by our deeds."
Our aims and objectives are :
(1) The development of closer relationships and
brotherhood amongst the members.
(2) The promotion of such civic, benevolent and
cultural activities as the association shall
see fit for the necessary welfare of its members.
(3) To grant scholarships to members' children and
underprivileged children either within or outside
of the United States.
(4) To aid, if necessary, any member of the Royal
Barbados Police Force who may be visiting this
country and in need of help through no fault of
his or her own.
For the past forty-six (46) years public support has caused us to progress beyond all expectations. We can proudly say that we have lived up to the dictates of our motto, and have done "so much with so little." Over the years the association has awarded scholarships to students in Barbados, New York and the tri-state area. In addition the association has contributed to charities in the aforementioned areas and the wider Caribbean. We have adopted primary schools in Barbados, namely St. Margaret's Primary, St. Mark's Primary and St. Bartholomew's Primary. During the past sixteen (16) years we have been conducting tutorials for children in the community at our headquarters every Saturday morning free of cost. This programme was started by a former President, Coleridge Bispham and his wife Thelma. We have also made contributions to the Geriatric Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados, and have assisted in the hurricane relief efforts in Grenada and Jamaica, two islands ravaged by Hurricane Ivan. The organization donated a number of computers in 2006 to the Ministry of Social Transformation in Barbados which were in turn given to several community groups. In January, 2007 the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados was the recipient of over US $50,000.00 worth of medical supplies. These supplies will go a long way in alleviating some of the burdens at that institution. This year we are looking at adopting another primary school in Barbados as part of an ongoing process. We are again working on getting more medical supplies for the health services in Barbados.
